Mitochondrial Disease

Mitochondrial Disease

Mitochondrial diseases are chronic (long-term), genetic, often inherited disorders that occur when mitochondria fail to produce enough energy for the body to function properly. Mitochondrial diseases can be present at birth, but can also occur at any age.

Mitochondrial diseases can affect almost any part of the body, including the cells of the brain, nerves, muscles, kidneys, heart, liver, eyes, ears or pancreas. (clevelandclinic.org)

About one in five thousand people are stricken with this disease every year. This disease can lead to developmental delays in children, not the least of which are speech delays. If your doctor has diagnosed your child with mitochondrial disease and you are noticing various speech and language difficulties, schedule a time to meet with us. We can help.
