IEE guide
An IEE can give families another view of school communication needs.
An independent educational evaluation, or IEE, may be discussed when families have questions about a school evaluation, communication goals, AAC needs, or service recommendations.
Speech-language IEEs can look at communication skills that affect educational access, participation, functional communication, and related support needs. For speech therapy, the evaluation may consider how communication affects classroom participation, learning, peer interaction, AAC access, and independence.
What an IEE may review
An evaluation may review speech clarity, language understanding, expressive language, social communication, AAC needs, classroom participation, existing reports, and family concerns. The evaluator may look at current services, progress, classroom impact, and whether recommendations match the child's communication profile.
When families ask about IEEs
Families may ask when school concerns persist, reports are unclear, AAC needs feel under-addressed, services do not match the child's needs, or there is disagreement about communication support. Questions may also come up when a child is not making expected progress, communication tools are not being carried over, or goals do not feel connected to daily school participation.
What to prepare
Helpful documents include IEPs, prior evaluations, progress notes, teacher concerns, AAC information, medical reports when relevant, and examples of communication breakdowns. Families can also write down what they want the evaluation to answer, such as whether AAC is needed, whether goals are functional, or whether school supports are clear enough.
